Children create Christmas cards for elderly in homes
Elderly living in 41 homes across Malta and Gozo will this month get an extra dose of Christmas cheer through a card designed by children as part of the #nannietpostoffice initiative.
Schoolchildren have been busy colouring and cutting out shapes to design their cards, which are intended to spread the festive spirit to the elderly who are living in homes, and in certain cases unable to join their families.
This is the second year that the Malta Foundation for the Wellbeing of Society has teamed up university professor Alexiei Dingli and Stephen Bezzina and Marvic Sciberras, to organise this heartwarming project.
Over the past weeks, the Education Ministry sent an email to schools in Malta and Gozo encouraging children to unleash their creativity. The idea was to design a Christmas card with a few uplifting words to share with elderly citizens in homes who, over the past months, faced increased moments of loneliness as a consequence of the pandemic.
MFWS chair Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca said: “With this gesture, we want to celebrate our elders, who have so many lessons to share with us… These past two years have been especially isolating for the elderly and we wanted the messages and drawings of these children to restore a sense of love and companionship.”
Children who would like to design their own card to be sent to the elderly in homes are still in time to do so and can upload their design on www.nannietpostoffice.com by Sunday December 5, 2021.
