Żurrieq Local Council has taken an important step towards improving the recycling practices within their locality by teaming up with GreenPak, the MEPA authorised scheme operated by GreenPak Coop Society Limited. This is the second Local Council to migrate to GreenPak from its competitor in the last three months.

GreenPak was appointed by Żurrieq Local Council to provide a superior waste separation infrastructure within the community, which has been absent for months. The separated materials collected will be sent for recycling, in a renewed push towards increasing the recovery of packaging materials in a more sustainable way.

GreenPak will be installing new sets of recycling banks for plastic, metal, glass and paper which will be located in various areas around Żurrieq, as well as manage collections throughout the week including Saturdays from shops and small businesses. Free recycling bags will be distributed to each household in an effort to encourage ‘Recycling on Tuesdays’.

GreenPak’s  CEO, Ing Mario Schembri, said: “The town of Żurrieq stands to benefit from GreenPak’s commitment to improve the environment. We offer a combination of collection methods. These include the provision of recycling banks, kerbside collections and direct collections from commercial outlets. GreenPak strives to make it easy, practical and rewarding for Żurrieq’s residents and its business community to separate its waste.”

The Mayor of Żurrieq, Mr Silvio Izzi Savona, said: “Our Council decided to migrate to GreenPak’s scheme because GreenPak’s in-depth knowledge and professionalism can serve as an asset to our community. This local waste recycling partnership will be crucial in our community’s drive towards wider sustainable waste management objectives by disposing waste in environmentally acceptable ways.”

GreenPak’s core philosophy revolves around the need of continuous education and awareness about recycling of waste. To this end, GreenPak has recently launched an environmental lottery campaign entitled “You win… The environment wins” which seeks to encourage more residents to recycle their packaging material, by rewarding them for their efforts with a weekly cash prize of €200. This draw forms part of GreenPak’s nationwide drive towards more sustainable practices.
