LifeCycle (Malta) Foundation marks World Kidney Day 2023 with donation for Traccia software

LifeCycle (Malta) Foundation marked World Kidney Day 2023 with the presentation of its seventh annual donation towards the running of Traccia software at Mater Dei Hospital’s Renal Unit. LifeCycle’s first sponsorship agreement with the Ministry for Health dates to 2017 when the software-based solution for matching kidney donors with medically compatible transplant candidates was introduced at the hospital.
This year’s cheque of Eur10,000 was presented to Celia Falzon, CEO of Mater Dei Hospital, by the founder of LifeCycle (Malta) Alan Curry, in the presence of Consultant Physician Dr Jesmar Buttigieg. This donation is part of the funds collected during the 2022 Nescafé LifeCycle Challenge.
In Malta, chronic kidney disease affects one in ten people, with 364 patients on haemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis at the end of 2022. The other form of Renal Replacement Therapy (RRT) for patients suffering from renal failure is kidney transplant, which is often considered to be the best option for the overall health and wellbeing of the patient. About 20-25 kidney transplants are carried out in Malta every year.
Traccia software increases the efficiency of kidney transplants leading to optimal matches, better chances of success and longer graft survival. The software facilitates data analysis by storing and processing the medical data of renal patients which is constantly being updated. It also increases the chances of finding the right match through a highly developed algorithm that allocates points according to several criteria such as the time spent on dialysis, age matching, human tissue typing (HLA) matching, clinical findings and hypersensitisation, among other indicators.
LifeCycle (Malta) Founder Alan Curry said: “LifeCycle (Malta) Foundation has very proudly been financially supporting the running of Traccia software at Mater Dei Hospital since the very beginning. Besides giving a lifeline to patients with end-stage renal disease, kidney transplants offer patients an alternative to dialysis, leading to an overall better quality of life for both the patients themselves and their loved ones. This kind of advanced software solution has a far-reaching impact and complements the other advances in kidney transplants.”
LifeCycle (Malta) Foundation was founded in 1999 to raise awareness on kidney health as well as to raise funds for medical treatment and research into kidney disease. Its fundraising cycling marathon that was first organised in 2000 has since become an annual fixture. The 2022 Nescafé LifeCycle Challenge saw participants completing a 1,700 km gruelling cycling feat from Buenos Aires in Argentina to Santiago in Chile.
