GreenPak’s WEEE Compliance Scheme offers best solution
GreenPak Cooperative Society is encouraging organisations, businesses and merchants who trade electrical and electronic goods to sign up with GreenPak’s Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Compliance Scheme before end August 2015 in order to avoid incurring hefty fines.
Since 2007, these companies, referred to as ‘obliged companies’, have been obliged to recycle those products listed in the Legal Notice 204 of 2014 as they are legally bound to recycle them once their customers dispose of them when they are no longer needed.
The list of equipment incurring recycling obligations is wide and varied, including large household appliances (such as fridges, washing machines, air conditioning units); small household appliances (such as kettles, toasters, radios, hair dryers); IT and telecommunications equipment (such as computers, televisions, modems, printers, MP3 players); consumer equipment (such as digital cameras, clocks, musical instruments); photovoltaic panels; lighting equipment; electrical and tools; toys, leisure and sports equipment; medical devices; monitoring and control equipment; and automatic dispensers.
Ing. Mario Schembri, GreenPak Coop Society CEO, said: “The best way for an obliged company to meet its legal and environmental obligations is to join a trusted and fully compliant WEEE Compliance Scheme, such as that offered by GreenPak. Building on the success of its widely-used packaging recycling system which already services over 1,300 companies across Malta and Gozo, while providing recycling services to over 70% of the Maltese population. This is a sure way to help Maltese businesses to fulfil their obligations.”
“Organisations stand to greatly benefit upon joining GreenPak’s WEEE Compliance Scheme. Besides providing peace of mind that the organisation is fulfilling its obligations, an obliged company will avoid incurring heavy fines which are effective as from 1st September 2015, besides the added benefit of not having to pay the Eco-Contributions any more. The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) requires individual companies to present financial guarantees calculated at €210 per tonne of electrical products sold to ensure that the company is recycling its WEEE products. GreenPak Coop Society is able to provide this financial cover at no extra cost, either to the trader or its customers,” he added.
For those organisations who register their company with a fully compliant and officially recognised WEEE scheme by Monday 31st August 2015, the Authorities are granting a waiver absolving them from their past recycling obligations dating back till 2007. In order not to leave the registration for the last days, as usually happens in Malta, GreenPak is recommending that interested organisations and businesses register their company with the scheme by Monday 24th August 2015.
GreenPak is run as a cooperative society and its scheme is managed on a not-for-profit basis providing total transparency in the way it goes about its business.
