Institute of Maltese Journalists reacts to arrests in Daphne Caruana Galizia murder case

The Institute of Maltese Journalists is satisfied with the recent developments that have taken place in relation to the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia who was killed by a car bomb on 16 October.

The fact that three people have been arraigned in Court following their arrest and subsequent interrogation during these past two days marks a historic moment for the Institute for justice to prevail in favour of freedom of the press.

The Institute of Maltese Journalists expresses its appreciation in particular the Malta Police Force, the Armed Forces of Malta and the Security Services that were supported by foreign experts for their relentless effort in the investigation carried out during these past seven weeks.

The Institute of Journalists is appealing to the government to introduce tougher punishment for persons convicted of a crime, assault, threat and/or intimidation against journalists. The Institute is also asking the government to immediately begin discussions that lead to adequate protection in such cases.
