Art Exhibition & Book Launch by Maltese watercolour artist Paul Caruana
During the month of October Maltese artist Paul Caruana is presenting an exhibition of 32 watercolour paintings all of which are new works that form part of a series of paintings created for his autobiographical book ‘Wrinkles’.
‘Wrinkles’ which is also the title of the exhibition, is a book containing small personal recollections of Paul’s childhood and early youth, living in Valletta, Rabat and Mdina up until he reached the age of 16. That was the year his father passed away and that is when his story stops short.
In the book Paul reflects upon and writes about the history of where he lived, the community he lived in and the daily occurrences, at times comical, at others less so, that formed part and parcel of his life back then. Playing in the street with other children, camping in the balcony, observing the persons who peopled his life during the whole of the 16 years with the adventures and misadventures he recounts. He reminisces about the good old days and a Malta which has completely changed since then.
The exhibition of paintings reflects most of these memories, in softly executed watercolours that are produced in a quasi humorous manner, tinged with nostalgia. The curator Marika Azzopardi has helped the artist carefully sift through all the paintings which were created for the book, so that the exhibition carries a vivid cross-section of works that reflects Paul’s accounts visually. His ‘fairytales’ as he calls them come to life through his visual interpretations which are, generally speaking, extremely true to life.
The exhibition of watercolours by Paul Caruana, entitled ‘Wrinkles’ will be held at Wignacourt Museum, 2, Colleg Street, Rabat is being held between 4 – 29 October 2025
Monday – Sunday 09.30 – 17.00 (last admission 16.15)
