Linguistic differences between Malta and Gozo explored
It is a well-known fact that Gozitans have a different dialect to the Maltese. In Gozo one finds a long list of words being used which the Maltese either do not know or have never heard of.
In this talk called “Bahar jaqsam”, Dr Michael Spagnol and Keith Attard will be presenting a collection of the lexical differences in the speech of the two islands. They will explain how the words were collected and they will discuss an experiment carried out with different groups of young people. Finally they will attempt to explain why there is such a vast difference between words used in Malta and Gozo.
This talk is based ona study carried out which can be found in Leħen il-Malti (Issue Number 33). It is being organised by Għaqda tal-Malti – Università with the help of GUG.
The event (which is free) is being held on 11 December at 5pm in the Common Room a the University of Malta and the general public is invited to attend.
