White Cane Day celebrated in Valletta

The Malta Guide Dogs Foundation and the Malta Society for the Blind collaborated to jointly celebrate White Cane Day in Valletta yesterday.

Members of the MSB, officials and supporters of the MGDF and their helpers met at City Gate and walked down Republic Street to St George’s Square.

The MGDF first gave a demonstration in O&M (Orientation and Mobility), including how to use the White Cane. Then MSB gave a demonstration in Independent Living. Afterwards the participants met the President of Malta, Dr George Abela, in the Courtyard of the Presidential Palace, where they presented him with a memento.

“Today the Malta Guide Dogs Foundation and the Malta Society for the Blind organised a memorable activity, which shows that blind people can live independent lives too,” the Chairman of the MGDF, Leone Sciberras, said.

“I am grateful for everybody who contributed to White Cane Day in Malta because today we have continued to create awareness and the public could also understand our situation better,” Mr Sciberras added.
