MALTESE SPELLING BEE IN CASTILLE SQUARE, VALLETTA, AND IN NADUR SQUARE, GOZO


Yesterday, the Għaqda tal-Malti – Università and the European Commission Representation in Malta organised the third edition of the annual Maltese spelling bee in Maltese in Castille Square, Valletta, from 18:00 to 20:00. On the 18th of September 2019, the same activity will take place in Gozo in Nadur square between 19:00 and 21:00.

This spelling bee will take the form of a competition for children between 8 and 13 years old, split between two sessions; the first for children who are between 8 and 10 years old, and the second session for children between 11 and 13 years old.

Żanżan Kelma is being organised with the collaboration with Danusan, who will be presenting the Maltese and Gozo sessions, and reading the words out to the participants. A record of 118 applications was reached, which came down to 30 participants due to an eliminatory phase. Each participant will be a given a book, provided by Merlin Publishers, Horizons, Klabb Kotba Maltin, Faraxa Publishing andGħMU. Apart from this, each participant will be given a certificate of participation.

The final Maltese and Gozitan winners will compete against each other in the final round of the competition on the 28th September, 2019, during the celebration of the European Day of Languages. This language fair will start at 20:00 in St Paul’s Squarein Qawra, next to the National Aquarium. Whoever wins this edition of Żanżan Kelma will win a free trip to Livigno with an adult, whilst the runner-up will be given a tablet.

Members of the Committee of Għaqda tal-Malti will be present to ensure that the words are spelled correctly.
