I Am My Own Wife is a play based on a true story, and inspired by interviews conducted by playwright
Doug Wright over several years. It tells the fascinating real-life tale of German transvestite Charlotte Von Mahsldorf – born Lothar Berfelde – who lived openly as a cross-dresser for almost her entire life under two of the most conformist regimes of the 20th century – Nazism and Communism.
Doug Wright heard of Charlotte’s story and was mesmerised from the beginning. He contacted Charlotte and they first met in Germany in 1993. It was here that Doug began to uncover the amazing story of Charlotte’s life as a sexual libertarian, a compulsive collector of 19th century antiques and a German celebrity. However, he also came across some of the darker revelations of this enigmatic and morally ambiguous heroine’s survival during the occupation. The play has garnered much praise and multiple awards, receiving both the Tony Award and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2004.
Production Company Exit Stage Right is bringing this fascinating story to Malta for the first time. Featuring well-known actor Alan Paris, directed by Nanette Brimmer, this is a one-woman show performed by a man – one actor, thirty six characters and one incredible life story.
I Am My Own Wife is being staged in a new space – Vault No.2 – at The Valletta Waterfront on 3rd, 4th, 5th, 10th, 11th & 12th May. Tickets are available from St James Cavalier, www.sjcav.org. Tel : 21 223 216
