LifeCycle (Malta) Foundation announced the details of the 2023 LifeCycle Challenge. This year’s endeavour, which is now in its 23rd edition, will take the cyclists and their supporting team down the South East Asian peninsula, from Bangkok in Thailand, all the way to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
The 2023 LifeCycle Challenge will kick off on 26 November with the team reaching its destination on 6 December after cycling along a 2,000-kilometre route in 10 days, surpassing the 1,700 kilometres cycled from Buenos Aires in Argentina to Santiago in Chile in 2022. Several sponsors have already committed to support this year’s challenge including the main sponsor Nescafé, together with Technoline Ltd, Simblija Care Home, Tri-Mer Services Ltd, Laferla Insurance and Farsons Foundation.
The launch of the 2023 LifeCycle Challenge took place on 3 April. The event was addressed by LifeCycle (Malta) founder Alan Curry amongst other speakers. Prof. Enid Said delivered an overview of the Kidney Research Programme which is currently being undertaken by the University of Malta Research Trust (RIDT) with the help LifeCycle (Malta) Foundation’s ongoing sponsorship, whilst a representative of the Transplant Support Group outlined the support received from the Foundation through funds raised from previous LifeCycle (Malta) events.
With the help of its sponsors, cyclists, organising and support team, and the generous response of the public, LifeCycle (Malta) Foundation is aiming to raise Eur200,000 through this year’s challenge. The funds will mainly go towards funding the TRACCIA Software Support System which is the software used at Mater Dei Hospital’s Renal Unit for the matching of kidney donors with medically compatible transplant candidates; the ongoing research programme on CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) at the University of Malta; new couches for patients undergoing renal dialysis and the annual trip to Lourdes for renal patients.
LifeCycle (Malta) Foundation was founded in 1999 and is a registered organisation with the Commissioner for Voluntary Organisations. Since its inception, the Foundation has raised over Eur3.2 million in aid of its mission towards renal patients, to support medical research and raise awareness on renal disease. Fund raising by the Foundation centres around the LifeCycle Challenge, a cycling and endurance challenge that was first held in 2000 and has since become an annual fixture in the calendar of local sports and charity events. Over the years, the LifeCycle Challenge has seen cyclists visiting 53 countries and cycling an impressive total of 40,317 kilometres.
