Handball at KMS Skolasport rising in popularity

Handball is often described as waterpolo without water, hockey without sticks, or soccer using hands. One thing is certain: handball at KMS Skolasport is steadily becoming more popular with each semester. A mixed group of over 20 boys and girls aged between 9 and 13, practice handball on Friday evenings at the Cottonera Sports Complex.

Ian Tonna, qualified PE teacher and KMS Skolasport handball coach at Cottonera, said: “Handball instils team spirit and discipline among participants. Although their level of play varies as some players are beginners while others are in their second or third year, they learn to work for others as an effective team. Physical fitness is a crucial part of this discipline and as coaches we try to convey the message that beyond the weekly training session the participants need to have a healthy nutrition to sustain them. After a warm up session and set exercises, they practice their skills and enjoy the game at the end of each session.”

KMS Skolasport is organised by Kunsill Malti għall-iSport and sponsored by Kellogg’s, the world’s leading producer of breakfast cereal. Besides the Cottonera Sports Complex, KMS Skolasport offers training in various sports complexes and localities, namely Marsa Sports Complex, Tal-Qroqq Sports Complex, St Benedict’s Sports Complex in Kirkop, St Ignatius College Tal-Handaq Sports Complex, Maria Regina College in Mosta and St Clare College in Pembroke giving participants the opportunity to practice their favourite sport at their nearby locality.

Kellogg’s is sponsoring KMS Skolasport for the fifteenth consecutive year as part of its commitment to promote physical activities and the importance of a balanced diet among the Maltese community.
