Increasing awareness for regular eye checks

World Sight Day was marked last month with Class Co. Ltd of San Gwann setting up a pop-up, fully equipped, modern eye-care clinic to enable residents at the Caritas San Blas Therapeutic Community Centre to have their eyes checked and receive a free prescription.
Three optometrists, Jerome Gabarretta, Kerstien Gabarretta and Julien Tua, were brought on board for this initiative in line with this year’s theme for World Sight Day: increasing awareness in the community for regular eye checks to help limit/detect signs of visual impairment, blindness and eye-related illnesses.
In line with the theme for World Sight Day, it is recommended that eye tests are done on a consistent basis at least every two years. Children are particularly vulnerable since they may not realise they have a visual impairment, which could limit their well-being.
“The type of eye-wear is equally important to ensure optimal vision, comfort and suitability,” commented Martin Mercieca, Class Co. Ltd Chief Executive.
Caritas Malta director Leonid McKay is extremely appreciative of this generous gesture and said: “Such initiatives assist our residents in making a full recovery and in their endeavours to re-integrate into Maltese society.”
Caritas has been providing a drug rehabilitation programme in the local community for more than 30 years and has been an effective support to those striving to rid themselves of the abuse of drug addiction. The San Blas Therapeutic Community Centre provides for both day-stay, residential and non-residential rehabilitation programmes for persons with drug dependency problems and their families.
