New Financial Incentive for Petrol Motorcycles
Transport Malta, together with the Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure, and Public Works, has re-launched a financial incentive for anyone buying a new petrol-powered motorcycle.
If you register a new petrol motorcycle from 1st April 2025, you may be eligible for this grant – which can also be combined with the scrappage scheme if you’re getting rid of an old vehicle.
This initiative aims to encourage more people to switch from cars to motorcycles, especially for short trips and during busy traffic times.
The Authority believes that this is another step towards reducing congestion and helping the environment. Applications for these grants are now open to all eligible vehicle owners and can be obtained from Transport Malta offices or online through the Transport Malta website.
Interested applicants may obtain the application form through any of the following methods:
Download it from the Transport Malta website: https://www.transport.gov.mt/Land/Sustainable-
Transport/Other-Grant-Schemes/New-Petrol-powered-Motorcycles-7270
Collect it in person from the Transport Malta offices located in Marsa or Lija
Request it directly from authorised dealers selling eligible petrol-powered motorcycles
Completed application forms must be submitted to the Transport Malta offices in Marsa or Lija from
Monday to Friday from 07:30hrs till 13:00hrs.
For further information about this scheme, interested individuals are encouraged to contact Transport
Malta on the dedicated helpline: 8007 2309.
Applicants are entitled to one (1) grant each, and applicants who received a grant for a petrol motorcycle
between 2021 and 2024 are not eligible under a grant under this scheme.
The grant amounts to be paid for each used electric vehicle in category M1 and N1 purchased, subject to
eligibility criteria stipulated in the scheme document, are listed below:

Moreover, Transport Malta draws the attention of potential applicants to the following important
conditions:
- There are ONLY 10 destruction facilities authorised to destroy cars in line with the end-of-life directive.
The list of approved facilities is available on TM’s website and the scrapping form VEH 13. - It is illegal to garage and/or sell a vehicle for parts. Vehicle owners must dispose of their vehicles at
authorised destruction facilities ONLY. Only these are certified to issue destruction certificates. - After this process, the vehicle owner must visit Transport Malta and present the number plates,
destruction certificate, and registration certificate (logbook) to have the vehicle officially scrapped and
deregistered with TM. - If an applicant intends to avail from the scrapping scheme it is of outmost importance that the vehicle
must be in the name of the applicant before the vehicle is taken to the destruction facility and before
the new electric vehicle is registered. It is illegal to purchase a vehicle which has already been destructed
at the facility and try to transfer it on your name with the Authority. A vehicle CANNOT be transferred
once it is scrapped with the Authority.
