Mosaic Art in Gozo
Between mid-September and mid-November 2025, Il-Ħaġar Museum in Victoria, Gozo shall be hosting its next temporary exhibition – Mużajk – a collection of mosaic art by Gozitan artist Mary Portelli. Portelli shall be showcasing no fewer than 45 of her latest mosaic artworks, several of which depict familiar landmarks in Gozo. These include places such as the Gran Castello, Comino Tower, St Anthony’s Battery, Kenuna Tower, Gordan Lighthouse, Sopu Tower, and the Carnival Monument in Nadur. The mosaics also include abstract designs, floral works and a special collection of water-inspired compositions.
The artist creatively creates her art pieces from a variety of tesserae which are collected over time, meticulously cut and patiently assembled. These are sourced from ceramic tile, fragments of bone china, crockery, local stone, smalti, shells, mug handles, and other hard materials and discarded elements which all come into play in order to complete her vision and artistic interpretations.
Mary Portelli is a well-known and established mosaic artist who has a number of public mosaics to her credit, including the colourful mosaic murals which welcome visitors upon reaching Mgarr Harbour in Gozo. She has also participated in a number of exhibitions and public participation projects, apart from organising seminars and workshops with the aim of teaching the art of mosaic work.
Curated by Marika Azzopardi, Mużajk will be inaugurated on Saturday 13 September at 19:30,
and everyone is invited to the official opening. The exhibition then runs until 16 November and may
be viewed during Il-Ħaġar Museum’s opening hours of 09:00 to 17:00, Monday to Sunday. Admission is, as always, free.
