Just three months after starting operations, Lord Chambray, the artisanal brewery in Xewkija, Gozo, received an Honourable Mention for its San Blas ale in the Brussels Beer Challenge 2014 last weekend.

San Blas, entered in the section Pale & Amber Ale: English IPA, was the only entrant to receive an honourable mention. Breweries in Italy, the United States and Spain were awarded the gold, silver and bronze medals, respectively.

No fewer than 725 beers took part in the Brussels Beer Challenge, which is in its third edition and was held this year in Leuven. A tasting panel of 60 international renowned beer connoisseurs sampled beers from all over the world over the two days of the competition.

The Challenge’s mission is to promote the beer industry in a market that is not only a benchmark for beer but also home to connoisseurs. It has three objectives: to promote quality beers and encourage healthy competition within the industry; to offer consumers a quality seal awarded by industry members; and to offer beer producers a promotion and marketing tool.

Samuele D’Imperio, Managing Director of Lord Chambray Ltd, said it was a matter of great satisfaction that a craft brewery from Gozo that has only just started production should immediately make an international impact.

San Blas is a pale ale brewed with a blend of hops, especially Cascade and Amarillo, to produce a deep amber colour and obtain a more aromatic and very appealing taste of grapefruit and orange flowers.
