LEONARDO THE SPACE PIANIST UNVEILS ‘CHRYSALIS’
Pianist and aerospace engineer Dr Leonardo Barilaro, known as the Space Pianist has
released ‘Chrysalis’, a captivating and transformative space music composition. This release is five
months following the success of his space music composition ‘ZER0’, that was onboard the International Space Station and broadcast to Earth. This remarkable achievement marks the second
occasion when the music of the Space Pianist was in Space.
Recorded on the ethereal and innovative Zanta ZB200 grand piano, literally a “space piano” for its refined sound and aesthetic qualities, this composition takes on a journey of profound metamorphosis.
As the composition unfolds, it paints a vivid musical landscape that mirrors the concept of a chrysalis – a space for transformation. Imagine a dimly lit stage adorned with a mysterious cocoon, barely recognizable in the soft glow. The initial notes emanating from the piano are almost static, creating an atmosphere of suspense and anticipation. The lighting, ever so subtly, changes in colour, mirroring the gradual shift in the melody’s pitch and texture.
This symphony of colours and sounds is reminiscent of the cocoon seemingly coming to life. The light grows brighter, and its hues evolve, while the melody continues its slow transformation, like a celestial body in a cosmic ballet. Suddenly, a burst of movement and sound erupts into the space, accompanied by a dazzling flash of light.
The crescendo of energy evokes the powerful moment of metamorphosis when a caterpillar emerges from its cocoon as a radiant butterfly. However, as quickly as this spectacle emerges, it recedes, bringing everything back to a tranquil hush: the movement, the sound, and the light. In the final act of “Chrysalis,” the cocoon is no longer a mere dormant moon but has transcended into a luminous star. The music, with its delicate notes and celestial harmonies, narrates this magnificent transformation, taking the listener from the realm of dust and obscurity to the brilliance of radiant light.
The project has been developed in collaboration with Zanta Pianoforti, Italian brand and a rising star in the landscape of luxury pianos.
Leonardo the Space Pianist’s tireless dedication to both the arts and the realm of space exploration is underscored by his unrelenting belief that the flames of artistic expression always burn. His creative journey finds its roots in the mantra “Nullo Die Sine Nota”, Not a day without a note, an embodiment of his commitment to weaving musical notes into the fabric of every day.
Leonardo is working day after day to reach the Low Earth Orbit and stream a concert from there, a general rehearsal before the concert from the Moon and, later on, from Mars. At the end of 2024 a new mission onboard the International Space Station, ASTROBEAT, will deliver to orbit not only new cutting-edge technology with an experiment to test cold-welding adhesion to repair spacecraft after an impact with space debris, but also new space art.
His travel till now can be found in the book “Music from Space”, published by Amazon.
‘Chrysalis’ and its spacey sound will be available on Spotify and all main music digital platforms.
