Pianist and aerospace engineer Leonardo Barilaro has released a tribute single for the 10^th year anniversary of the launch in the stratosphere of the SCRAT Experiment for the European Space Agency (ESA), milestone of his journey as Space Pianist.

SCRAT, the Spherical Compact Rechargeable Air Thruster, is an experiment realized by a Team of the University of Padova in the framework of the REXUS-BEXUS program. SCRAT is a low-thrust cold gas actuator, using as propellant the air collected by a compressor from the surrounding atmosphere. The experiment flew on board the BEXUS10 stratospheric balloon, the cold night of 9th of October 2010 at 3.07am, from ESRANGE Space Center, the Swedish launch base above the polar circle, surrounded by the northern lights.

Leonardo took part in the mechanical design of the experiment and developed a series of soundtrack compositions, all revolving around the main theme which characterizes also the new release, SCRAT10.

SCRAT is much more than just an experiment and since that moment a Family was born, spread nowadays all over the world and expanding. SCRAT proves that the Sky is not the limit.

Leonardo is currently based in Malta and developing his music research where he merges with different live techniques piano and synth. Since the start of the Covid19 pandemic he produced and released 2 EPs and 3 singles, shifting from a progressive metal influence to a more refined and elaborated electronic sound.

SCRAT10 is an example of this, where also ‘hacked piano’ techniques are present, filtering in real-time the sound of the instrument.

The experimental single “SCRAT10” and its retro-futuristic sound was launched yesterday, the same day as a videoclip as a tribute merging 2010 and 2020.
