International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
On the occasion that marks the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Malta Confederation of Women’s Organisation (MCWO) notes with regret the ruling given by the Speaker in the case of the Honourable MP Marlene Farrugia. “We find it incomprehensible how the threat of physical violence against a woman was taken so lightly in parliament. This gives the wrong message to society on violence against women.”
Whilst noting that the Opposition took an immediate stand against this ruling, the MCWO now calls on the Prime Minister to take the appropriate action against the Honorable MP Joe Debono Grech as a sign of zero tolerance towards violence against women. Inaction and silence on this grave incident mean the condoning of violence against women at its highest level by those who have the responsibility to ensure that gender based violence be effectively addressed and eradicated from Maltese society.
The Confederation is an umbrella organisation that represents 13 local member organisations. The MCWO is a full member of the Brussels based European Women’s Lobby.
