Thomas Van Tonder at The Grid Main Event
World Champion and Red Bull Athlete Thomas Van Tonder flew over from South Africa to Malta for the 2nd time in the space of a month to prepare his team for the Grid Main Event.
Darren Borg, Marko Nikolic, Kyle Darmanin, Richard Grioli, Saviour Bonnici, Gerth Bajada, Ian Cremona and Kurt Camenzuli formed part of #TeamThomas after being selected by Thomas himself in a previous team selection.
The team underwent a specialised bootcamp ahead of the event and proved in some successful individual results for the team. Kyle Darmanin placed 2nd overall and Kurt Camenzuli was the runner up in the 16-29 category.
Thomas Van Tonder was ecstatic about the performance of his team: “The team has shown amazing progression and grit from the team selection up to race day. Every athlete gave it their all on race day, some performing to personal bests. I am very proud of all of them for their full commitment to the #TeamThomas boot camp.”
He continued to speak about The Grid and OCR in Malta and said that the #TeamThomas bootcamp has been an incredible experience.
“It was a privilege sharing my OCR knowledge with the local Maltese OCR athletes, clubs and community, seeing them grow and push beyond their boundaries. The OCR community in Malta has been very impressive and so welcoming. The future of OCR in Malta is looking incredibly bright,” he continued.
Another OCR World Champion will be coming to Malta in the coming weeks. This time it’s Ida Mathilde Steensgaard, and she will be selecting her all-female team in preparation for the new Grid Arena event in July.
There remains a few places for the team selection event open and interested athletes can apply on thegridmalta.com.
