Running For Those Who Can’t

This Sunday, 7th May you have the chance to join a truly global running event together with your friends and family – no matter where they are located.
The start signal will sound for the 10th annual edition of the Wings for Life World Run on Saturday at 1pm CET. Red Bull Wings for Life is a perfect event to run, walk or roll all by yourself and at the same time form teams and connect across borders. You can do this via the Wings for Life World Run App and the unique Audio Experience that will inform, entertain, and motivate you along your run.

What is Wings For Life?
The Wings for Life Foundation has been promoting international cutting-edge medical research since 2006. The foundation was founded by Heinz Kinigadner and Dietrich Mateshitz following an accident in 2003 that left Hannes Kinigadner, Heinz’s son, paraplegic from the shoulders down. Since then, the Wings for Life Foundation has raised millions of Euros to support promising research projects and clinical studies worldwide with the Foundation‘s main mission being to find a cure for spinal cord injuries.

Facts about Wings for Life Run
Over a million people have taken part in a total of nine Wings for Life World Runs. The main goal now is to soon have a million runners participating in a single event.
119 billion steps have been taken by runners who have participated so far.
38.3 million euros in donations have been raised so far through the Wings for Life World Runs alone. 100% of this money has been received by the Wings for Life Foundation and has therefore been used for spinal cord research.
35,397 participants were at the starting line for the first ever Wings for Life World Run in 2014. When it was held for the ninth time last year, there was a sensational turnout with 161,892 participants from 192 countries.

About the 2023 Wings For Life Run
All runners and wheelchair users taking part in the Wings for Life World Run will start off on their run at exactly the same time at 1 p.m. CET and run or roll as far as they can. They choose where to run and there is no set finish line. Instead, 30 minutes after the starting signal, the Mobile App Catcher Cars will start moving and gradually accelerate to overtake the participants one by one. As soon as the Mobile App Catcher Car has caught up with the runner, their personal race is finished. Hence, the truly special thing about the Wings for Life World Run is that everyone is a finisher no matter how far they’ve run!

Promotional video filmed in Malta

Earlier this year, top running athletes from different countries came to Malta to shoot a promotional video in a Wings For Life extreme run. Luka Kovačič, Christian Pflügl, Ryan Mex (Farrugia), Denisa Dragomir, Ruy Ueda and Ryan Sandes attempted to run the whole of the Maltese island, starting from Marsaxlokk and finishing off at Paradise Bay. Professional Rally Car Driver Catie Munnings was on board of the Red Bull Sugga, which was used as the Catcher Car.

Runners had to reach 3 different checkpoints and the last runner to reach the checkpoint or being chased by Catie was eliminated. Local runner Ryan Mex finished the run as the winner.

“It was a great experience to be part of this project and run along these champions. I encourage everyone to register and run for those who can’t on next Sunday’s Wings For Life App World Run”.
