Limbo: Exploring the notion of migration

Limbo is a devised work which explores the notion of migration. This verbatim-style piece is inspired by a number of interviews which recount the stories of people from all over the world who have experienced various forms of migration; a promenade-style experience wherein stories and characters stimulate the creation of music and art throughout the journey of the process and performance itself. Ultimately, we are challenged to to revisit “home” and to re-evaluate what we understand by integration.

In hopes of finding a better life, people move – humans move, as history tells – always have and perhaps always will. However it is a personal journey where one’s identity is revisited; with a part left behind, and another subjected to another culture, the question of roots comes into play. Is who I am who I was, who I will be? How fine a line is forgetting and moving on to a newer you? Home is where the heart is, yet in having a number of attachments to places, does that mean there can be more than one home, or none at all? These questions and other perspectives on migration will be tackled in Studio 18’s LIMBO – a walkthrough experience that welcomes the audience into the worlds and hearts of migrants from all over the globe who have chosen to share their story with us.

Limbo explores the concept of migration as the encounter and enmeshment of cultures. The performance consists of actors who relive our characters’ interviews, accompanied by a live pianist who improvises to the journey of each episode.

Can a waiting room, no-man’s land, Limbo, become home?
