Transport Malta commemorates World Maritime Day 2024: “Navigating the Future: Safety First!”
The Ministry for Transport, Infrastructure & Public Works, together with Transport Malta, is
marking World Maritime Day 2024 under the theme “Navigating the Future: Safety First!”. This year’s
focus is on the maritime industry’s efforts to adopt new technologies and cleaner fuels while
keeping safety and sustainability at the forefront. As part of the celebrations, the iconic Triton
Fountain in Valletta will be lit in blue from sunset until midnight on the 26th of September, in
recognition of International Maritime Day.
Minister Chris Bonett stated that, “As we celebrate World Maritime Day, we honour Malta’s rich
maritime heritage and the vital role of our seafarers. We are committed to ensuring Malta’s maritime
sector remains at the forefront of global shipping innovation, not just through safety and
sustainability but by preparing our people for the future,”
Transport Malta CEO Kurt Farrugia continued, “This day not only celebrates the positive
regulations that shape the industry but also the dedicated people who drive its success.
That’s why, in collaboration with the National Skills Council and with the support of the
Directorate-General for Structural Reform Support, we’re working with the Organisation for
Economic Co-operation and Development to tackle skills gaps in the local maritime sector. This
initiative will ensure that our workforce is ready for the future, from digitalisation to the green
transition.”
As a long-time member of the International Maritime Organisation Council, Malta remains dedicated
to promoting safe and sustainable shipping. With one of the largest ship registries in the world,
the Malta Ship Registry ensures that our fleet meets the highest international safety standards, all
while adopting greener practices. Recent regulatory updates further demonstrate Malta’s
commitment to reducing emissions, in line with IMO and EU targets.
Looking ahead, the Malta Ship Registry within Transport Malta, is embracing digital
transformation, with automation and artificial intelligence playing a growing role in daily operations.
By digitalising the Malta Ship Register, the department is streamlining operations, improving security,
and reducing the environmental footprint.
