Busy Rooms Maltese development team win Thack competition in Barcelona

Last week the Busy Rooms development team were invited to compete in this year’s Thack event held in Barcelona and organized by Tnooz and Digital Tourism Think Tank. Thack brings together developers, travel industry experts and entrepreneurs to share ideas on travel technology innovations. The main focus of the event was a competition where teams had to develop new technology which makes travel more compelling, easier and fun. With only one day to build and present their ideas, categories included:

  • Think mobile, act local: Build a mobile application that rocks the traveler’s journey … while in Barcelona or elsewhere in Catalunya
  • Travel wear: Create an innovation that uses wearable tech to track, enhance or share traveler experiences
  • Wings, wheels & beyond: Make an exceptional European travel experience using three or more modes of transport
  • Personalization, cool, not creepy: Combine public user profile data, geo-location and social media to create a personalized travel experience

‘Around’, the wining Busy Rooms idea, is a mobile web app which creates a personalized self-guided tour for travelers. Using information taken from Google, Trip Advisor and Rome to Rio platforms personalized tours are created for the traveler. The web app can base tours around your current location using geo location technology and also connects with Facebook to deliver results based on the user’s personal ‘likes’.

The wining Busy Rooms team were awarded €1000 and return flights to any Vueling airline destination of their choice. Travel technology and investment experts adjudicated the event with judging criteria based on technical merit, originality, completed challenge(s) and presentation skill.

All the Busy Rooms team, including Busy Rooms CEO Sascha Hausmann who also attended the event, are now safely back in Malta and will continue to improve and add to the Busy Rooms technology.

However, they may all now be armed with just a few more ideas!
