ISPORT Training Camp for visually impaired athletes opens to families for the first time

For the first time since its launch, the ISPORT Training Camp for visually impaired youngsters, has expanded beyond athletes and coaches to include families, recognising the vital role parents and caregivers played in their development.

The third edition of the camp brought together 16 families at the newly inaugurated Gozo Indoor Sports & Aquatic Pavilion (GISAP) for a three-day programme focused on sport, connection and shared support.

The initiative, held between January 23-25, was organised by The Malta Trust Foundation, with the support of the UEFA Foundation, in collaboration with the Malta Paralympic Committee and the Gozo Ministry. Beyond the annual training camp, ISPORT provides weekly swimming training sessions for children and young people with visual impairment.

Foundation chair Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca said: “Opening the camp to families marks an important milestone for ISPORT… Sport is not just about performance; it’s about building confidence, resilience and strong support systems around each child.”

Alongside professional pool-based training sessions led by Italian Paralympic coaches Federica Fornasiero and Enrico Testa, families took part in shared activities and informal discussion spaces designed to encourage dialogue, peer support and the exchange of experiences.

Malta Paralympic Committee secretary general Julian Bajada said: “This camp gave parents the opportunity to connect with others who understand their journey. When families feel supported, young athletes thrive both in and out of the pool.”

Organisers noted that the inclusion of families strengthened the long-term impact of the ISPORT programme, helping to build an inclusive sporting culture in Malta and Gozo that extended beyond competition and training.

Dr Bajada added: “By bringing children, parents and coaches together, we’re creating a true team environment. That’s where real progress happens.”
