Melita eyeing 100 per cent solar target
Melita Ltd is aiming to be powered exclusively by solar energy within a few years, going way beyond its international commitments under the SBTi (Science Based Targets Initiative) to cut emissions by 42 per cent by 2030.
Melita CEO Harald Roesch said: “By early this year almost 10 per cent of our energy will be derived from solar power, but we are committed to achieving our 100 per cent target in as short a period as possible in our continuous drive to harness renewable energy sources and reduce our carbon emissions.”
Generating 10% of the company’s electricity from solar energy will be an important stepping stone in Melita’s overall environment effort and one which contributes to the decarbonisation target set by members of the Malta ESG Alliance, a private sector initiative set up by 13 leading local businesses to tackle the environmental, social and governance priorities.
Projects to which founding MESGA members have committed to are estimated to reduce CO2 equivalent emissions by at least 18,000 tonnes per year – equivalent to the total annual emissions produced by the entire village of Marsaxlokk.
In other steps to reduce emissions, Melita recently replaced 20 of its fleet with electric vehicles – meaning 20 per cent of the company’s fleet is now electric – and aims to add a further 16 electric vans in 2023 as the company’s conventional fuel-driven vehicles are phased out. By the end of this year, the company expects 40 per cent of its fleet to be fully electric.
