MADC PRESENTS THE PRIDE
The Malta Amateur Dramatic Club’s production for April and May is The Pride by Alexi Kaye Campbell, directed by Michael Mangion. This award winning British drama counterpoints the two parallel love stories of three characters that alternate between two very distinct time periods and whose fate is written by their eras.
It is a hilarious and heart-felt landmark play about courage, compassion and the fear of loneliness in life’s journey towards self-discovery. Philip, Oliver and Sylvia exist in a complex love triangle which spans over half a century, living and loving simultaneously in the repressive 1950s and now in the present, more liberated but still imperfect; against a background of changing attitudes. Past and present worlds grind together and melt apart, yet the future and its promise of sexual liberation remains ever elusive, as societal repression gives way to self-deception.
Philip is played by Malcolm Galea, Sylvia by Julia Calvert, Oliver by Philip Leone Ganado. Ben Milton provides comic relief in a number of supporting roles.
Campbell’s brilliantly funny dialogue and perceptive observations bring the characters to life. While it explores fate, love, fidelity and forgiveness, The Pride asks questions about contemporary life (gay and straight), but doesn’t presume to answer any of them concretely.
The Pride will be performed at St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta on 24, 25, 26 April 1, 2, 3 & 8, 9, 10 May 2015.
