Personal experiences with cancer shared to promote awareness

An inspirational talk was organised by HSBC Malta’s Banking on Women (BOW) and Europa Donna Malta to promote awareness among BOW members. During the event a donation collected by BOW members was presented to the Breast Cancer Awareness Group.

Europa Donna Malta President Gertrude Abela discussed many common myths and genuine fears associated with breast cancer and emphasised the importance of regular self-examination and breast-screening in order to detect possible issues early on.

“Early detection is the best defence against breast cancer, and, with one in eight women estimated to experience it during their lifetime, one cannot stress the importance of early detection enough,” she said. “BOW has been very supportive both in terms of donations as well as through the organisation of events such as this to promote much needed awareness.”

BOW President Rita Sammut-Buontempo presented the donation while offering heartfelt thanks to Europa Donna representatives. “Europa Donna are educating and supporting people across Malta and Gozo. The compassion and encouragement they provide to families in Malta is making a world of a difference, and the increased awareness helps relieve so much psychological suffering as well as effectively improving the prognosis of cancers by promoting early detection and better medical treatment.”

The session included a talk with moving personal insights by Rowena Enriquez, a member of the Europa Donna Young Survivors Section, addressing the realities faced by many individuals whose lives are affected by cancer.

BOW is a voluntary female association within HSBC Bank Malta which actively supports women in realising their career ambitions within the bank as well as other life goals.
