Maltese Association for Physical Educators has been set up

The Maltese Association for Physical Educators (MAPE) was recently launched at the Institute for Physical Education and Sport at the University of Malta.

The committee is made up of  Mr. Andrew Decelis – President, Ms. Lara Tonna – Vice-President, Ms. Nadia Gosney PRO/Secretary and Mr. Godfrey Grima – Treasurer. Mr. Keith Bartolo, –Ms. Graziella Galea and Ms. Amanda Farrugia as members while three University students are representing students, Mr. Aldrin Cassar, Mr. Christian Borg and Mr. Julian Fenech

MAPE aims to bring physical educators together with the vision of strengthening the field of PE and sport in our schools. The newly elected team on the committee made up of experienced teachers and lecturers in physical education along with its members, shall strive to facilitate the exchange of knowledge, skills and ideas among its members; to promote, publicise and disseminate good practices and local research as well as set up working groups on specific and relevant topics aiming at improving the quality of the teaching- learning process.  MAPE also believe in fostering the professional development of the P.E teacher at all levels of education as well as supporting the professional development of class teachers in primary schools. Last but not least MAPE aims to promote the importance of physical education as a means of promoting a healthy lifestyle.

Membership is open to all PE teachers in state, Church and independent Schools, PE teachers who are currently not teaching the subject, lecturers in PE and Sport, ex-PE teachers, retired PE teachers and University PE students.

Meanwhile, the prestigious Dr.Michael Aquilina Award was  also presentedto new graduates Ms. Mariette Saliba and Mr. Daniel Sciberras,  for their outstanding performance during the B.Ed (Hons) course in PE and the Diploma in Sport and Leisure studies respectively. This is just one of the ways that physical education recognizes dedicated people within the field. Dr. Michael Aquilina made an outstanding contribution to physical education throughout his lifetime and touched the lives of many in the field.
