What’s so wrong with smiling?
Last week I wrote briefly about TVAM the new breakfast show over at PBS, and mentioned that Joe Mifsud and Pierre Portelli could lighten up and smile a bit more.
Well apparently, Joe got a bit miffed at this suggestion. According to Kristina Chetcuti, writing in yesterday’s The Sunday Times, the following exchange took place:
One morning last week, Pierre turned to Joe and said: “Smile Joe, they’re telling us we’re not smiling enough”, to which Joe replied, a touch on the defensive, that they’re not there for ‘kummiedji u tejatrini’ .
Loosely translated he said, “we’re not here to clown around”. Now how did Joe Mifsud manage to turn a smile into something negative? A smile is one of the best non-verbal clues you can give to a viewer that you are welcoming them, and asking them to stay tuned. Conversely, if I see a presenter with a furrowed brow looking like he’s about to bite someone’s head off, I change the channel.
Don’t we have enough aggro in this country as it is, without the people on the small screen giving us bad vibes as well?
Relax, Joe, if you want to stay grumpy go ahead, after all it was just a suggestion.
