Oh what a circus, oh what a show…
Every year, the arrival of the circus in Malta over Christmastime leads to hot debate about whether the animals are cruelly treated or not. Animal lovers insist that no animals should ever be used in circuses, where they are trained rigorously (using questionable methods) in order to perform tricks for our enjoyment.
Those who see nothing wrong with it believe that you cannot have a circus without animals and it is probably the only time their children will have the chance to see these exotic animals up close.
Meanwhile, rumours that the Bahar ic-Caghaq “no animal” circus and the one in Floriana belonged to the same entrepreneur, were firmly denied by Mr Silvio Zammit (Floriana circus) when I contacted him. He also extended an invitation to visit at any time.
I asked photographer Joe Demanuele to visit the animal circus in Floriana and he came back with these photos shown here.
I’m not going to comment, but will let you decide.
