IGM condemns attack on Times’ photographer

The Institute of Maltese Journalists unreservedly condemns the attack by security officers on Jason Borg,  a Times of Malta photographer, in the course of his duties. The attack on Mr Borg occurred when the photographer was taking pictures of a vehicle that had caught fire in the Mater Dei car park.

The Institute of Maltese Journalists can never accept any form of hindrance to journalists in the carrying out of their duties, even more so when this is accompanied by violence.

Whilst reiterating that violence in any form on journalists can never be tolerated, the Institute of Maltese Journalists appreciates the immediate action taken by the security firm involved, and the hospital authorities, leading to an investigation of this regrettable incident.

I seem to remember reading that he was taking photos with his mobile phone. Most people don’t seem to mind the taking of photos with what they perceive as a non-professional camera. I find that people react differently when they see a big professional camera.
