Austin should be grateful he was not born British
A lot of fuss is being made because the now “famous” Nicola, a young Maltese student, was rude to a politician. I would say Austin Gatt got off quite lightly considering the extent of frustration and anger there is about the Arriva lack of service. And yet, today he was quoted as saying that he is “baffled” why everyone is blaming him.
Here I have to resort to an often used Maltese expression: “Dan bis-serjeta?”
Meanwhile some convenient media spin has turned Nicola into an ungrateful brat who should thank her lucky stars for living in 2011 Malta.
Actually, I think Austin Gatt is the one who should be saying a grateful prayer that he is not a British politician. In the UK, calling a minister rude names is not enough apparently to get the message home – there they like to be a little more, shall we say, tactile?
Here is a look at Politicians with eggs on their face . Of course I am by no means advocating someone throwing a pie at him – that would be a waste of a perfectly good pie.
What I suggest is that the Transport Minister is forced to spend a day riding the buses to all his appointments.
Maybe he will stop being so baffled.
