One of the most important challenges for UNESCO is reinforcing the role of culture as an essential tool in sustainable education and the promotion of peace.  The goals are also embedded in the Millennium Development Goals post-2015.  UNESCO is engaged in mobilising agents from different fields and regions in order to promote dialogue and understanding among cultures.  Through the Art Camp project, Andorra, a little state located in a cross-cultural region, started this project nine years ago, not only to foster support and promote dialogue for peace between artists from all over the world, but also to strengthen the educational dimension of culture.

Art Camp Malta joined this project in 2015. fifteen artists came to Malta to participate in this cross-cultural event, during which the artistic expression was the common and universal language. In 2017, the Maltese National Commission for UNESCO together with the Office for Education, Science and Culture in Gozo, hosted the second edition of Art Camp.  Over twenty-three artists participated in this event and it was evident that the artists’s work got an extra value as it was the result of living together with other peers and sharing their cultures with the Gozitan and Maltese communities through outreach programmes.

Since 2012, H.E. Madame Hedva Ser, UNESCO’s Ambassador Artist for Peace and Special Envoy for Cultural Diplomacy, has been the Godmother of this project.

This year again, the Maltese National Commission for UNESCO and the Office for Education, Science and Culture in Gozo, are hosting the third edition of Art Camp Malta in Gozo.   The event, which is sponsored by both public and private entities, will be hosting over twenty artists from the UE, North Africa and the Middle-East.  The Art Camp, which is an artist-in-residence programme, will be offering participating artists a time and space away from their usual environment and obligations, thus providing time of reflection, research, presentation and production related to the chosen central theme of the project.  A varied programme has been prepared for the artists during their stay in Gozo, including excursions to historic sites in Malta and Gozo, a culinary night, and also outreach programmes with the community and schools.

The Art Camp Malta in Gozo 2019 is being held from 24^th October to 5^th November at Tal-Fanal village in Għasri, Gozo and the theme for this edition is “Colours for Peace”.
