ROKARJA & Co……Thirty Years later

A Rokarja & Co reunion will be held on 31 March at the Black Pearl at Ta’ Xbiex from 9pm onwards. The general idea is for a lot of musicians (past and present) to meet and share their music ideas with each other with the aim of reforming their bands.

For those who don’t know what ROKARJA stood for,  it was an organisation founded by Philip Pace (1982/83) that took care of the Maltese bands that occupied a rehearsal room at Tigne barracks, held concerts and also helped out other bands which weren’t at Tigne at all. It was a very important organisation for the Maltese rock and pop cultural scene. Sadly this all came to an end in 1989 when the area had to make way for the development that took place in the Tigne area.

However the legacy of Rokarja is still with us after 30 years as it was a crucial milestone in the later development of the Maltese rock and pop scene.

This Rokarja & Co Reunion is the first activity to be held as similar  activities are being planned for the future,  in different places in Malta. The band 12th Ode will be performing at the reunion.

All musicians who formed a part of the beat groups of the 1960s, the rock groups of the 1970s, the Rokarja groups and other bands of the 1980s and the rest of groups that emerged from 1990s and 2000 and even from the recent years, are all invited to come along to this activity. It is also open to all those fans of these rock groups which means ex-roadies, helpers, friends and guests as well.

The plan is to hold a mega concert in May or June of next year, with the participation of different bands to emphasise Malta’s rock and pop LEGACY. This will be a one off event that will consist of a lot of musicians coming together from different eras playing to the audience in three evenings that shall be documented not just for today’s musicians but, most importantly for our future generations.

Who knows?  There might be a band with a 60-year-old guitarist playing with a 40-year-old bassist and a 25-year-old vocalist together with a budding young drummer plus a 30-year-old keyboard player. The possibilities of all these generations coming together for the love of music are large and exciting to imagine.

The organisers also look forward to including the participation of some of the very talented bands that are around at the moment.
