Original painting used in opera poster
Artist John L Grima (left) presents the original painting, commissioned by Teatru Astra for the poster of the upcoming opera production Norma, to Paul Zammit, President of Socjetà Filarmonika La Stella.
In this painting, John Grima is inspired by the story revolving around the strong and determined Druid priestess. The poster reflects Norma’s beauty and strong will with the abstract elements surrounding her imposing face representing her conflict of thoughts that finally result in the utmost sacrifice. The painting includes pronounced white strokes that reflect the purity in Norma’s thoughts that notwithstanding the fact that she went against the Druid promise of chastity, her thoughts and actions remained noble.
Norma will be staged twice, this Thursday 27 and Saturday 29 October at Teatru Astra. The production brings together a strong cast led by soprano Dimitra Theodossiou who is considered as the contemporary Maria Callas in the international scenario. Few tickets are left for both productions with booking available on 7926897 or bookings@mediterranea.com.mt. More information is available at www.mediterranea.com.mt. The opera Norma opens the 10th edition of Festival Mediterranea that runs until 19 November.
