Grandma Got S.T.E.A.M

Grandma Got S.T.E.A.M. was launched on Friday 9th November in the presence of H.E. Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca, President of Malta and will be open for the public till 9th December at Spot A, Spazju Kreattiv.

The exhibition concludes an intergenerational project that took place over a series of storytelling workshops in the past months. A group of youths from Youth.Inc – Aġenzija Żgħażagħ worked closely with five successful women hailing from different industries pertaining to Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (S.T.E.A.M.).

Through the project, the participants shared their work and life experiences whilst discussing any obstacles or opportunities that they encountered. The result was a rich array of memories, emotions, hopes and dreams that are captured in the illustrated storytelling pack of cards.

Rachael Blackburn, Esplora Director mentioned that “it was an honour to work with this group of youth and see them develop in the process through their interaction with the team and grandmas. A perfect example of bringing Science, Art and the community together through intergenerational learning.” Spazju Kreattiv Artistic Director Toni Sant said that “It is through collaborations with diverse organisations that creativity of expression can be allowed to thrive and develop across generations and disciplines”.

The project progressed in three phases; the first consisted of the storytelling workshops between the youths and the five grandmothers. The second phase saw the development of the storytelling and design processes leading to the production of the illustrated storytelling card pack. Finally, the third phase comprised the Train the Trainer Sessions.

This project was curated by Spazju Kreattiv and Esplora. The participants collaborated with Dr Giuliana Fenech who facilitated the storytelling element, illustrator Julian Mallia (also known as Julinu) and photographer Dragna Rankovic to develop the illustrated storytelling cards.

Grandma Got S.T.E.A.M.was financed by il-Premju tal-President għall-Kreattività – an arts fund that strongly supports social and community creative projects. Il-Premju tal-President għall-Kreattività is coordinated by Arts Council Malta in collaboration with the Office of the President.
