Food as communication

The Office of the Prime Minister was the recent venue for an event which was quite “different.”

The Same Difference project, led by SOS Malta and co-financed through the European Refugee Fund Annual Programme 2011, aims to promote meaningful interaction between beneficiaries of international protection and different sectors of Maltese society, using food as a communication and bridging medium.

As part of this project, a team of cultural ambassadors, who are recognised as refugees or were granted subsidiary protection status, were trained in food handling. Over the coming year and a half, these cultural ambassadors will travel to various locations and events inMaltaand Gozo to share with the general public varied international dishes they will cook themselves.

The Same Difference project was launched at the Office of the Prime Minister, Auberge de Castille, in Valletta and the cultural ambassadors were there to meet the public and offer them the dishes they prepared.

SOS Malta believes that inclusive interaction between people of diverse backgrounds contributes to a society focused less on individual differences and more on shared experiences.
