Women’s organisations congratulate female MEPS

The Malta Confederation of Women’s Organisations (MCWO) is delighted with the good news that the Maltese electorate has voted for 4 female MEP’s out of 6 and that might possibly mean that our country will have one of the highest percentage of female MEP’s within its delegation amongst our EU counterparts. The Confederation has been lobbying very hard since its inception on the need for gender parity in democracy, also in line with the 50/50 campaign of the European Women’s Lobby of which the Confederation is a full Board member.

Lorraine Spiteri, Chairperson of the Confederation said ‘We feel that the unrelenting lobbying of our members together with a political commitment to support female participation at all levels has enabled a cultural change and a fertile ground that has resulted in more female candidates putting themselves forward and eventually four of them getting a high number of votes.’

Best wishes go to Dr Roberta Metsola, Dr Miriam Dalli,  Mrs Marlene Mizzi, and Dr  Therese Comodini Cachia who together with Dr Alfred Sant and Mr David Casa will make a positive contribution to EU policy areas especially those that promote women’s involvement in political economic and cultural life and those that tackle violence against women.

The Confederation is an umbrella organisation that represents 14 local member organisations which collectively have 24,000 female members. The MCWO is a full member of the Brussels based European Women’s Lobby.
