Hit the road, Jack

If there is one thing which makes me see red it’s when this administration tries to boast about “giving” us good  roads. In the long list of its “achievements” over the last four years we were regaled with this litany of roads which were repaired:

–  Wied il-Għajn Bypass
– Triq Valletta, Żurrieq
– Tigne tunnel
– It-Triq tax-Xlendi
– It-Triq tad-Dwejra
– the road from Għajnsielem to Xewkija, Gozo

and the following roads which are being fixed:

– Triq il-Kunsill tal-Ewropa and Triq Garibaldi
– Xatt l-Għassara tal-Għeneb, Marsa
– Underpass in Triq Diċembru Tlettax
– Triq il-Marfa, Mellieħa
– Pennellu Bypass, Mellieħa
– Triq l-Imġarr, from Xewkija to Rabat, Gozo

First of all, decent roads should be something we take for granted in this day and age, and not something which we should be “grateful” for.  It’s the government’s job to ensure a good road infrastructure,  so don’t expect a pat on the back or simpering thank yous – just bloody do it.

Mostly, however, all this blowing of trumpets about our roads is simply laughable to anyone who drives in Malta, which is pretty much everyone.  As for bringing up the torn up roads, mayhem and general disaster which has become Gozo because of the roadworks….I mean, seriously?

How can this administration expect the above list to be met with anything but derision?  Ask anyone living in residential areas which have potholes the size of craters, and who have to navigate them in a zigzag fashion any time they leave the house (while taking the risk of crashing straight into an oncoming car in the process).

And should Austin Gatt or any of the people at Transport Malta, who are so busy putting up the above signs need a list of roads which have been neglected, never fear.  I’m sure they only need to refer to the this story here.

Heck, we will even provide them with the relevant Google maps and a GPS to help them zero in on the exact area they have to visit.

There may be sectors about which Gonzi has the right to toot his own horn, but our roads are definitely not one of them.
