Celebrating Mattia Preti

The general public recently had opportunity to view the on-going restoration of the painting representing the Annunciation by Mattia Preti and his Bottega, at the MdinaCathedralMuseum, as part of his 400th birth anniversary celebrations

Leading conservator on this project, Erika Falzon together with her team are cleaning this beautiful work of art and over the weekend, the public was invited to drop in and watch them at work.

“The canvas support has been treated to fix the tears and holes as it was weak primarily due to an acute insect infestation” said Erika Falzon. “Through a long and laborious process we are now removing the removed old yellowed varnish and several over-paintings, to reveal the beautiful oil painting that lay beneath it.”

On the 25th November 1698, less than 2 months from his death, Preti accepted 200 ducats payment in advance for for this painting which was to decorate the left transept in the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Paul .

This restoration has been made possible thanks to Corinthia Group, Curmi & Partners Ltd, EC Meetings, MaltaInternational Airport and Forestals.
