Lord Chambray strikes double gold

Lord Chambray, the artisanal brewery in Xewkija, Gozo, has been awarded two gold medals at prestigious European beer competitions for its Blue Lagoon and San Blas ales earlier this month. This is on top of the two bronze medals obtained by Blue Lagoon and Fungus Rock at the International Beer Challenge 2015 in the UK in August.

Blue Lagoon achieved the top accolade in its category, a gold medal, at the European Beer Star 2015 competition in Nuremberg, Germany, and is now the number one wheat beer in Europe, a title it will hold for 12 months.
With 1,957 beers representing 45 countries in 55 categories taking part, the European Beer Star, this year in its 12th edition, is the second most important beer competition in the world after the World Beer Cup, held in Denver, Colorado, USA.
It took 115 master brewers, beer sommeliers and trade journalists two days to blind taste all the different beers. During this blind taste test, the beers are evaluated for criteria that a consumer would use when tasting a beer: appearance, foam, smell, taste and typical brand characteristics. They are not the brand, only the beer’s style.

According to Roland Demleitner from the organisers Private Brauereien Deutschland: “Winning a medal is getting harder and harder from year to year. With the blind taste testing, the European Beer Star is already one of the most difficult competitions.”
And Samuele D’Imperio, Managing Director of Lord Chambray, added: “The category Blue Lagoon participated in, Wheat Beers, is usually won by German and Belgian breweries, with a historical and cultural experience of hundreds of years in beer brewing. This makes the achievement of Lord Chambray all the greater.”
Lord Chambray was back at the Brussels Beer Challenge once again this year with San Blas, which obtained an Honourable Mention in 2014, coming away with a gold medal in the Pale & Amber Ale: English IPA section.

The Challenge’s mission is to promote the beer industry in a market that is not only a benchmark for beer, but also home to connoisseurs. It has three objectives: to promote quality beers and encourage healthy competition within the industry; to offer consumers a quality seal awarded by industry members; and to offer beer producers a promotional and marketing tool.
This year the number of entries increased to a new record 1,103 (up from 725 last year). A tasting panel of 78 international renowned beer connoisseurs sampled the beers, grouped according to their origin, specific characteristics and style, from all over the world over the two days of the competition.

Mr D’Imperio, who was in Germany and Belgium to collect the two gold medals, said the experience was “unique”. To ensure even more public participation, the European Beer Star event was open to the public and the auditorium for the award ceremony was packed.
“I would like to thank the Island of Malta for all the support I have received in the past year and a half since we started operations in Gozo. We are extremely happy with these prestigious results – five awards for our four beer brands is helping to give a different type of visibility to Malta internationally,” he added. “They should also help us in our efforts to seek export markets for these artisanal brews.”

Abraham Said of Abraham’s Supplies, Lord Chambray’s Gozo distributor, said he was very proud to be distributing these artisanal ales in Gozo. “These awards help our local clients to appreciate even more that we are producing top quality products in Gozo. We wish Lord Chambray all the best for the future,” he said.
André Grech, Managing Director of Mirachem Ltd, who distribute the beers in Malta, added his congratulations for the two latest accolades for Lord Chambray. “I always believed in the brand and the people who make it,” he said, adding:
“They are very serious producers and very serious business partners. Lord Chambray beers have been well received by the people of Malta and the response to our tastings has always been positive. I am not surprised they have received these gold medals since, of all the beers I have tasted, they are among the top.”
Lord Chambray are going from strength to strength, and these new accolades will surely ensure greater penetration of their home market.
