IĠM condemns threats made against journalists

The Council of the Malta Institute of Journalists (IĠM) has condemned any kind of threat made against journalists, especially while they are in the process of carrying out their duty.

Recently, TVM journalist Brandon Pisani and other journalists were threatened and intimidated by the relatives of five young men who are being arraigned in Court to face charges of having assaulted another youth.

The incident happened on 4 November when the five young men were being arraigned in Court accused of having tried to cause grievous injuries to Liam Debono during an argument that ensued between them at the Luqa Industrial Estate.

In its statement the IĠM said that any form of violence, including verbal, is unacceptable and should not be allowed to happen unchecked as if it were of no consequence.

The Council thanked the Police for their intervention in this matter, by providing the necessary protection to the journalists, including their safe return to their workplace. It appealed for this protection to be always assured to journalists in the course of their duties.
