#16Ways in #16Days – MGG’s 16 days of activism

As the curtain calls on 16 days of activism, a campaign against gender based violence, the Malta Girl Guides (MGG) would like to join millions of individuals and organizations worldwide, in calling for action to end violence against women and girls and for the protection and promotion of the rights of women and girls.

The MGG, participated in the campaign in partnership with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) and the Ministry for Social Dialogue, Consumer Affairs and Civil Liberties. The campaign ran from 25th November till 10 December 2016.

Throughout the campaign, the MGG showed that individual action can go from small personal steps to action at a national level. For 16 Days, the MGG told people that everyone has the capacity to take action to stop the violence. Through the MGG’s efforts, volunteers are taking strides towards ending violence against women and girls in their local communities.
The campaign was launched on 25th November, during this year’s MGG awards night. The event was held with an orange theme, symbolising the MGG’s work on creating awareness on gender based violence. Commissioner for Domestic Violence, Mr Joe Gerada was guest of honour.
Throughout the 16 days of activism, MGG’s work in this field was shared on WAGGGS’ social media as a best practice model of Girl Guides’ involvement in the community, to raise awareness and advocate against gender based violence.
Assisted by funding through the Small Initiative Schemes (SIS) operated by the Malta Council for the Voluntary Sector, the MGG went on to produce an awareness raising video, that was streamed on social media.
On 4th December, the MGG joined a network of NGOs working in the field of domestic violence, in a national walk against violence, entitled Everybody’s Business. The walk from Blata l-Bajda to Castille Square in Valletta was held in aid of NGOs who work directly with victims of domestic violence and other NGOs working on educational prevention programme. The walk will become a yearly event with next year’s being scheduled for 26th November 2017.
Violence against women and girls is not inevitable. Everyone can take action to end violence against women and girls.
