Lecture by Perit Amber Wismayer – Sustainable Regeneration of San Anton Palace

In keeping with its remit to promote awareness and sensitive re-use of Malta’s architectural heritage, Flimkien ghal Ambjent Ahjar (FAA) is organising a series of four lectures showing our heritage sustainably remodelled and renewed.


Four prominent Maltese architects will discuss their projects, elaborating how they have interpreted a contemporary approach, introducing today’s standards of quality, style of living and spirituality in developments that involve precious heritage architecture across Malta.


Each lecturer will tackle these issues from a different angle, and we invite the public to come to understand and be inspired by their concepts and methods, allowing these four very different architects to introduce their stunning results to a wider audience in this quartet of lectures.

Sustainable Regeneration of San Anton Palace

Perit Amber Wismayer, together with FAA, invite you to a fascinating lecture describing the case study in safeguarding Malta’s architectural legacy through sustainable interventions and sensitive, adaptive re-use, of San Anton Palace and its beautiful staterooms. This lecture builds on the The Sustainable Regeneration of Built Heritage Initiative, led by Perit Wismayer under the auspices of HE, the President of Malta.


We will learn, how Maltese heritage buildings incorporate passive environmental design strategies such as natural ventilation, orientation towards the sun, thermal mass and shading. The use of traditional features such as the loggia, were developed over the centuries to provide comfortable living spaces for the palace’s occupants. How the Palace’s original features were incorporated to improve comfort by maximising the benefits of passive strategies while safeguarding the building’s heritage value will be explained in detail.


International studies have shown that significant energy savings may be achieved without reducing a building’s cultural and architectural value, offering huge potential in reducing national energy demands. San Anton Palace, now the residence and office of the President of Malta, was originally built in 1620 as a country retreat for Grand Master Antoine de Paule and embellished over the centuries. Thus the different functions of this working palace must merge harmoniously with the highest standards of heritage protection, presenting a challenging case study.
