Scores of families and visitors made their way to the Water Services Corporation (WSC) which threw open its doors to the general public during an open weekend organised by the HSBC Water Programme – Catch the Drop, the Sustainable Energy and Water Conservation Unit (SEWCU), and a range of partners.
The event was organised to celebrate World Water Day, which is held each year on 22nd March.
Whilst a handful of activities – from fun to educational – were on offer at the premises, it was the control room with its giant screens and flickering lights that generated most interest amongst visitors. The visitors also showed heightened interest in the new WSC laboratories, where the quality of drinking water as supplied by the corporation is scrupulously controlled. The labs and the control room are one of many important functions of WSC in monitoring the production, quality and consumption of water around the islands.

Meanwhile in dedicated discussion areas, presentations shone light on the topics of energy efficiency in public and private sectors, water projects, and optimisation of municipal water supply. Children were kept entertained with Minions shows and a Sun and Drop Fun activities.
An exhibition area featured artwork by students of St Ignatius College and MCAST Institute for the Creative Arts, whose students also showcased their apps especially created for the HSBC Water Programme – Catch the Drop. These will be available to download soon.
Information points were set up by the Malta Business Bureau, MCAST Institute of Agribusiness, MCAST Institute of Applied Sciences, and a non-governmental organisation Living Matters.
